#Php viewer rotates image how to
I am wondering if or phpbb is doing the better job in regard to usability. You have set up a simple drag-and-drop image viewer in How to create a simple drag and drop image viewer? During resizing it corrects conflicts between pixel orientation and exif orientation. The saved photo is now 3023 by 4031 px (as expected) and exif is now "Horizontal normal). Now, I upload the photo first to and resize it from 3024 by 4032 px to 3023 by 4031 px and save it. The resized photo is changed to 800 by 600 (pixel rotated) and exif "Rotate 90 CW" remains as it was.

During resizing phpBB changes for example a photo 3024 by 4032 px and exif "Rotate 90 CW". In many cases, photos will be resized during upload. They report that other webapplications very often can cope with portrait smartphone Photos without user intervention. They say at least it is a problem of phpBB users. Many users do not care about the fact (fact?) that is not a phpBB problem. We try to educate users without much success. In our forum we suffer from the same problem. The EXIF data is still showing orientation =NORMAL (can be checked using the above theexifer site) Upload the photo, rotate it and download - I suggest adding ROT to the filename. There is a web based utility that does a pixel not EXIF based image rotation. To rotate an image it must be done by pixel rotation and not by using the windows rotate (EXIF update) option. This site is handy to see what is happening but alone will not FIX the issue.

This saves installing software on your PC. This web site lets you view EXIF data and edit the data then download the edited image. The image - once cleaned - will revert to the "as shot" image in windows and if this is the wrong way up and you rotate it again in windows - the EXIF data is updated by windows and back to square one to coin a phrase.

The site needs to interpret the pixel orientation to re-size the photo.Ĭleaning / removing all the EXIF data does not assist.

The site is interpreting the pixel orientation AND the EXIF rotation. This effectively double rotates the image on the site when it reaches the site - result being an upside down image. Many photo editors do the same.īut when the image is dragged from windows and dropped in the edit box of the posting editor (or the add file option is used) the image has the pixel dimensions of the rotated image but STILL has the Orientation = Rotate 90CW set. Windows does NOT do a pixel rotate - windows updates the EXIF data ONLY. If you took the photo with a phone and the image is the wrong way up and you rotate the image in windows THIS causes the issue. EXIF will show Orientation=Horizontal(normal) or for example ROTATE90CW (there are many options) This data will define the image orientation. The issue is with the EXIF data that is encoded with the photo at the time of shooting. ie a tall narrow photo (portrait) is displaying sideways or completely upside down. Some members have been having issue with images rotating when they post. I will probably be told that this is not a phpBB issue however I would be eternally grateful if anyone that has had similar issues explain what they have done to resolve it and that hopefully is on the server side so that the users don't even have to think about it. Now here's the interesting thing, I can open the portrait image in the Windows Photos editor, not make any actual edits, then save as a copy and attach that to a post and everything is fine.

The image thumbnails and the full size view are rendered fine on the pc however after attachment the portrait image thumbnail and full size view are rotated 90° clockwise whereas the landscape thumbnail and image renders just fine.

The issues is with files that have been transferred from a mobile device to a Windows 10 pc, then attached to a post in the forum. The thumbnail and full size image are oriented properly. Image uploads, both portrait and landscape, from a mobile device are now working perfect whereas before not so well.
